Phu Hai Prison in Con Dao is one of the prominent historical relics, closely associated with the painful yet heroic memories of the Vietnamese nation. Located right in the center of Con Dao town, Phu Hai Prison was built in 1862 and is the oldest and largest prison in Con Dao, built by the French colonialists to imprison revolutionary fighters. With its sturdy architecture of stone and brick, high walls, and heavy iron gates, it was once a "hell on earth" for tens of thousands of patriotic prisoners. Inside the prison, visitors can see cramped, dark cells, a system of brutal shackles, and especially the rice grinding pits – where prisoners had to work hard while enduring harsh supervision and torture. Today, Phu Hai Prison is not only a vivid testament to the crimes of colonialism and imperialism but also an indomitable symbol of the unwavering will and fighting spirit for independence and freedom of the nation. This is an important historical destination, helping present and future generations better understand the value of peace and appreciate the immense sacrifices of their ancestors.
