The photograph depicts the Nghiem Quan ceremony, an important ritual in the Gia village festival, located in Duong Lieu commune, Hoai Duc district, Hanoi. This ceremony reenacts the battle fought by General Ly Phuc Man (or Ly Phung Man) when he helped King Ly Nam De defeat the Liang invaders and establish the Van Xuan Kingdom. The Nghiem Quan ceremony portrays the image of the army moving in a swirling motion, breaking through encirclements, demonstrating the martial spirit and indomitable will of the Vietnamese people.
